In Curanderismo, Abuela Luna’s energy is very powerful. Many methods of honoring her: fire ceremony, bath ceremony, smudging, purging rituals, and drumming.

Try to either get outside to see the moon, or look at it out a window, or even jus...t close your eyes and visualize the full moon bursting with light and glory. Slow your breathing to enter a light meditative state by breathing in at the count of 4, hold for 4, exhale to 4. Once you’ve entered your meditative state set your intentions of letting go, purging, releasing and receiving abundance from the Moon’s Energies.

Prayer is very powerful at this time on the full moon and said to be very magical! Use this prayer to ask that your life is blessed with happiness, good health, friendship, love and more.

"I pray upon the moon,
That my prayer be heard soon,
These are the things I ask –
A happy home, and good health,
a circle of friends and peace of mind,
a special love that’s been hard to find.
Dispel my worries, all my fears,
protect my loved ones and keep them near.
Please keep me safe, with those I love
and bless my life from up above." ~Author Unknown

Below is a bath ritual given by Maestro Laurencio Lopez Nunez

Gather albahca (basil), ruda (rue), spearmint (yerba buena), feverfew (santa maria), rosemary (romero) for an aromatic cleansing bath. Traditionally in Oaxaca these herbs are used but use what you have on hand i.e. essential oils, sea salt, kosher salt, fresh rose petals or other flowers. Run hot water, place herbs/flowers in water and allow to steep for about 10 minutes. Soak for at least 30 minutes. Allow your body to “melt” away envida (envy), susto (fear), pesar (grief) and/or any energies weighing heavy on your spirit, heart, mind and body. Give yourself permission to make it a loving ceremony by adding lit candles, music, chanting etc “I Love Myself, I Accept Myself, I Embrace Myself” *Hint* Place herbs/flowers in a cotton sock or muslin bag to avoid clogging up the drain. Enjoy!

Many blessings,

How planting gardens can heal our children

Wow I just watched this TED
"Growing your own food is like printing your own money"
This was so good.  It just take a messenger like Rod Finley to make an impact on one of the biggest epidemic in America. "Diabesity"  Our children are predicted to have shorter lives if this is not made serious.  I love someone like Rod who doesn't believe in just talking, he is in action!!

Chris and I have made the choice to grow our own food in our back yard.  We have always felt too busy, but that is over.  We are creating the time....in our meditations to create the life we love which is plant based.  Plants that feed and nourish us.  This is creating us to step in to connecting to the earth and mother nature and all of her natural medicinal benefits that come from whole plants.  We will keep you informed as our gardens grow.

Watch this video about Central LA and the difference they are making with gardens.  So exciting.

DAFFODILS AT IRONSTONE WINERY SO BEAUTIFUL

Chris and I and our friend Linda took a fun trip up to Murphys California where Ironstone Winery had a Daffodil show.  I really appreciate flowers and their beauty, but what happened to me after going to this show was a shift of really appreciating flowers, especially Daffodils as I had no idea that there were so many varieties.  Some are large, small, medium, yellow, red, white, blended, aromatic, non-aromatic.  Below are some of the pictures.  This day we were blessed with beauty.  Ahhhh!!!!

New research reveals that there is a link between diet and bi-polar disorder, with sugar, caffeine and a poor diet having a negative effect and increasing the mood swings of sufferers. This comes at a time when there have been reports in the media of a strong increase in the number of people becoming affected by bipolar disorder.

These conclusions are drawn by Evanne Constantine and Wesley Freeman-Smith of Lewisham Counselling and Counsellor Associates, who will present their findings today, Friday 6 May, at the 17th Annual BACP Research Conference. The event, which is co-hosted by the Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPR) UK, takes place at the Liverpool Marriott Hotel City Centre, Liverpool, on 6-7 May 2011.

The study suggests that a strong link exists between nutritional intake and bipolar disorder. A good balanced diet, taking vitamins - specifically Omega 3, Magnesium, Vitamin B - and reducing caffeine and sugar all appear to help in minimising the intensity and frequency of mood swings for bipolar sufferers.

The research also highlighted that there are notable differences in sufferers' eating patterns at the onset of bipolar disorder; a sudden increase/decrease in appetite and/or erratic eating behaviour may occur. It is also suggested that nutritional intake changes in direct correlation with the constraints that the phases of bipolar disorder impose on sufferers.

Evanne Constantine said: "Overall it appears highly apparent that erratic eating patterns/diet and nutritional intake are intrinsically linked to bipolar disorder. Yet, its treatment seldom appears to consider the diets of sufferers. There also appears to be some practitioner stigma attached to assessing the impact this has on the condition because of its perceived association with alternative medicine.

"We suggest that further research is required but that treatment of this disorder may need to be revaluated, because our findings imply that bipolar disordered clients would benefit from nutritional intake awareness and knowledge of the valuable role diet can play in alleviating the condition's symptoms."

Wheat :( Bipolar

posted by Josephine on 4 Jan 2013 at 10:28 am After slowly getting to know my bipolar brain, I realised it wasn't enough to only find the right meds (hurrah), stop drinking alcohol completely and cut out coffee (tea seems ok in moderation) and sugar binges (switching to dark chocolate is a good idea, almost impossible to binge on a bar of 80%)...and then, yes, white bread. I realised another thing was making me sick, wheat! My partner, bless him, has started making bread, pancakes and quiches with rye or kamut flour. There are so many different flours to experiment with, wheat just isn't necessary. Kamut pasta is great too. It's so easy to make the switch, oh and I have lost 5kg without even trying, nice bonus :)

Interesting

posted by Brandon on 8 May 2011 at 4:58 am My fiancee suffers from level 2 bipolar disorder and is currently in a down cycle. I was always curious what types of diet changes could help her to be more comfortable, I will definitly suggest to her and try to encourage the omega 3 and vitamin B into her diet. Does anyone know if this will have any side effects when mixed with her lithium and prozac?

Mental Food

posted by Tom Hennessy on 6 May 2011 at 11:05 am One might wonder whether porphyria and bi-polar are linked because porphyria is ALSO 'brought on' by a lack of eating / fasting. Porphyria is accompanied in many cases with mental disturbance.

Personalized supplements made just foru

I started taking Genewize supplements in June of 2011.  Before I started using my Genewize I had kankor sores in my mouth every month for at least 1 week...so painful...I would say they started lightly when I was approximately 45 years old and just got worse and by age 50 I was tired of the pain.  Every since I have used Genewize I have not had any sores in my mouth.  The company took a swab from my mouth and tested for 12 snps of DNA.  What I found out is that both sides of my family had a disadvantaged gene that would not allow me to naturally absorb selinium.  What this amazing supplementation does for me is to live free of pain.  It has helped me in many other ways and I will continue to blog :http://mypersonalizeddnasupplements.blogspot.com/

Also if you want to find more information about this company and its science then go to the following link:www.kellyscoggins.foru.com

Who is Kari Lynn?

I was born in San Gabriel California, August 30, 1960.  My parents moved to Twain Harte California in 1963.  Growing up in a small town made me appreciate all things, from the smell of the fresh air, the sweetness of the fresh water lakes we swam in every summer, the open wilderness (adjacent Yosemite National Park) that created freedom and imagination, the rope swing cabled between to large cedar trees (that my father and brothers conjured up) that we would swing on for hours, the brush on the hill that we would play hide and go seek all day, and best of all the simplicity of life.  Except for the lack of health and wellness for BOTH of my parents.  My mother had Rheumatoid Arthritis and was in pain all of my life and my father who had a mental breakdown when I was two and never really recovered.  Both of whom I learned a tremendous amount of life lessons.  I appreciated my mothers integris work ethic as she got up every morning, in pain, and went to work, Pacific Lumber Company as a top secretary and my father was in the constant investigation of what life is about.  I never quite embraced compassion and acknowledgement of my parents until I had kids of my own.
4 kids, (3 daughters and 1 son), 2 grandsons, 3 granddaughters (SO FAR) and my husband has 5 sons and  2 grandchildren.(SO FAR)  We have been touched and inspired by all of them.  I also became humbled by the giving that it takes to be a parent.  Something that can't be explained until you are in the middle of raising children. Especially motherhood.......This says it all....

A little boy asked his mother, "Why are you crying?" "Because I'm a woman," she told him.

"I don't understand," he said. His Mom just hugged him and said, "And you never will."

Later the little boy asked his father, "Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?"

"All women cry for no reason," was all his dad could say.

The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why women cry.

Finally he put in a call to God. When God got on the phone, he asked,

"God, why do women cry so easily?"

God said, "When I made the woman she had to be special.

I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world, yet gentle enough to give comfort.

I gave her an inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times comes from her children.

I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up, and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complaining.

I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances, even when her child has hurt her very badly.

I gave her strength to carry her husband through his faults and fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart.

I gave her wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve to stand beside him And finally, I gave her a tear to shed. This is hers exclusively to use whenever it is needed."

"You see my son," said God, "the beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair.

The beauty of a woman must be seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart the
place where love resides."

So my passion in this life is to have the conversation about health and wellness and my subjects will include:
1.) Love
2.) Spirit
3.) Family
4.) Physical
5.) Meta physical
6.) Healing
7.) Vibrations
8.) Nutrition
9.) Environmental
10.) Community

Another very important time of my life was when I was married to my very precious 2nd husband "Greg Kelly".  We were on top of the world going for dreams, had one daughter together "Brittney" who was 2 1/2 and I was pregnant with our son "Gregory" I had a 14 year daughter "Zanna" and a 12 year old daughter "Alaina" from my first marrage. We were in the middle of building our dream house in Timber Cove California, right on the bluff of the Wild Sonoma Coast when suddenly Greg caught a cold, which turned into the flu, then pneumonia, then his back started to go out and he could not walk, then he started sweating in our bed...(I mean drenched the bed within hours after I would change the sheets).....
at the age of 32 he started the rough road of finding out he had a rare disease (Acute Lympho blastic leukemia).  He passed away 9 months later.  So fast......this also taught me to investigate into prevention.  How to avoid disease, keep out of the sickness industry be in the wellness industry.  I have learned so much and I am still learning, because new information is being provided daily.

The #1 thing that I have learned and want to share is that we as individuals need to take RESPONSIBLITY OF OUR BODYS and to teach our families to do the same.  How can we do this?

1.) Nutrition (what are we eating and feeding to our children?)
2.) Exercise (Energy creates energy)
3.) Reading (what are we feeding our minds? which creates our thoughts which creates our world)
4.) Social and Community (Studies show that human beings need community, connection and social interaction)
5.) Education (being willing to grow constantly)
6.) Activites ( playing and having fun creates Endorphins)

Endorphins
Endorphins are endogenous opioid peptides that function as neurotransmitters. They are produced by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus in vertebrates during exercise, excitement, pain, consumption ... Wikipedia
7.) Intimacy & pleasure (love and affection)

As I grow and learn my blog will expand.  I hope that as that happens I can contribute to others.

Food Cooked by my Friend Linda Wheeler from Singapore

As I am tapping into cooking more healthy food and opening up to more vegetables my friend Linda Wheeler offered to come share some of the food she learned to make in her country "Singapore"
She shared some amazing foods and below we have some pictures of the night.

The top is curry and vegetables.(we couldn't stop eating them"
The bottom is fryed Taro...so good

Food, community, laughter, learning and fun with
Linda Wheeler and Jan Marijaq

We also baked chard with coconut oil just until it was crispy and we ate all of it as it came out of the oven..so good and healthy too...I just received an email from Linda and she reminded me that we made Kale Chips, but then she looked up Chard chips and it looks like you can make them too...

Chard Chips

I love these chips so much — they are fast, easy, and have a delicious nutty flavor that makes them slightly addictive. They’re best eaten soon after baking, before the oil has had a chance to resaturate the leaves (the amount of oil can be reduced by using parchment or a silicone mat). I find that they are too fragile for dipping, but adding seasoning to the oil can provide a nice flavor boost. They also make a fine garnish. You may wish to try this recipe with spinach, red kale, or other light weight greens.
YOU WILL NEED:
1 bunch Swiss chard
1/4 cup olive oil, or 2 Tbsp. olive oil if you have parchment or a silicone mat
Salt & pepper, gomasio, furikake, or sesame seeds for seasoning (optional)
Preheat oven to 425°. Remove the spines from the chard and discard or reserve for another use. Chop the leaves into chip-sized pieces — as uniform as possible — and rinse. Pat dry. Dry! No water, or else they will steam and sog up, not crisp.

If you are adding seasonings to the chard, mix them separately with the oil. Put the chard into a bowl, pour the oil on top, and toss until everything is evenly distributed.

Arrange the leaves on a baking sheet — ungreased, if you are not using a mat — and put into the oven.

At this point: watch! They will not take more than 5 minutes to crisp up, and there is a fine line between crispy and delicious and burned and inedible. Check on them after 3 minutes. (This part relies in part on how well you know your own oven.) They will be brown, or transitioning from green to brown.
Remove immediately from the baking sheet with a pancake turner and spread on paper towels or a brown bag. Eat ‘em while they’re hot!
Makes 3-4 cups of chips, depending on the size of your chard bunch

Chris and I just experienced this amazing fruit which was introduced to us from a friend (Linda Wheeler) who is educating and sharing many new foods from Asia with us.  This is such a yummy fruit, it looks a lot like grapefruit, but tastes so much sweeter and easier to eat.  In our minds this is a great replacement for a tasty desert and very healthy for the body...

10 Health Benefits of Pomelo

The nutrition facts and health benefits of pomelo, the largest member of the citrus family.
The pomelo (pummelo), also called Chinese grapefruit, jabong, lusho and shaddock, is the largest member of the citrus family. This grapefruit ancestor has a soft but very thick rind. It has light yellow to coral-pink flesh that can be juicy to slightly dry with a flavor that range from spicy-sweet to tangy and tart. The flesh can be eaten straight, added in salads or in food preparations where grapefruit goes well.
For every 1 cup (190 grams), here’s how healthy it is.

Vitamin C – 193% DV

1. Helps prevent UTI
Drinking lots of water and loading up on cranberry juice are two of the natural effective ways to help fight urinary tract infection. Pomelo, with its ultra high vitamin C content also help combat this common inflammation during pregnancy. Vitamin C is known to up the acidity level in the urine discouraging the growth of bacteria in the urinary tract.
2. Promotes fast healing of wounds
If a loved one had surgery, shower her with vitamin C-rich fruits like pomelo and other citrus fruits. Vitamin C is a cofactor of enzymes involved in the formation of collagen, a protein which strengthens and makes skin elastic encouraging faster wound healing.
3. Promotes healthy teeth and gums
Bleeding gums and loose teeth may be a sign of vitamin C deficiency. Collagen is not only essential in skin formation but also in building healthy teeth and gums.
4. Helps prevent anemia
Scientific findings have shown that vitamin C enhances the absorption of iron in the body. That is why it is best to drink orange juice if you are taking iron supplements, or to eat broccoli or other vitamin C-rich vegetables with your meat so that both nutrients will be present in the intestines at the same time.
5. Helps prevent colds and flu
Vitamin C is one of the nutrients which play a very important part in stimulating the action of antibodies and immune cells which guard the body against invaders like bacteria and viruses that can cause respiratory problems.

Potassium – 12% DV

6. Helps regulate blood pressure levels
Another good reason to eat pomelo is because of its rich potassium content. It’s common knowledge that potassium helps lower blood pressure levels. Avocados, bananas and guavas are some of the fruits that are rich in this essential mineral.
7. Helps prevent osteoporosis
What does potassium have to do with bone health? Study participants have shown the significant link between dietary potassium intake and bone mineral density.
8. Helps prevent leg cramps
If ever you experience leg cramps it may mean that you’re body is calling for more potassium, a mineral which plays an essential role in muscle contraction and nerve transmission.

Fiber – 8% DV

9. Promotes bowel regularity
Pomelo is also packed with fiber, a must-have nutrient to help maintain regular bowel movements, prevent hemorrhoids and even colon cancer.
10. Aids in weight loss
Did you know that fiber is an ally for weight management? Experts believe that most high fiber foods stay in the stomach longer resulting in longer sensation of fullness; they also need more chewing time giving the body longer time to feel satisfied reducing the risk of too much eating.
Pomelo is also one of the few fruits which contain protein and calcium.

Alzheimer's Disease What if there was a cure?,

I just finished the book, "Alzheimer's Disease What if there was a cure?", author is Mary T. Newport M.D.  It is about a doctor and caregive discovers a high energy fuel that nourishes the brain .  So informative.  Mary has such heart, commitment and love as she stands by her man, as in the middle of her busy schedule of being a Doctor of the newborn intensive care unit at S;pring Hill Regional Hospital in florida, she is told that her husband has alzheimer's disease and basically there was not anything that she can do, except make her husband comfortable as he
deteriorates.  She chose to start her own investigation and she finds information about the story of Ketones and how coconut oil helps her husband gain back his life....I highly recommend this book for not only caretakers of Alzheimer's patents but also Diebites, Parkinsons, Huntingtons, mood disorders.  VERY INTERESTING!!    Here is a Youtube.....http://youtu.be/dRbnd-vNn9o
Worth the read.....

Can Coconut Oil Reverse Alzheimer's?

Can Coconut Oil Reverse Alzheimer's?

By Jerome Burne

One Man's Incredible Story

One morning last month, Vrajlal Parmar got up, washed and dressed himself, and at 10am boarded the council minibus to a nearby leisure centre. In the evening, the 67-year-old former production line worker from London took the bus home. Nothing remarkable there - except that nearly a year earlier Mr Parmar had been diagnosed as being in the late stages of Alzheimer’s.

He’d been given the standard pencil and paper test (called the Mini Mental State Examination) that doctors use to diagnose Alzheimer’s and measure how it’s progressing. A healthy person would score 30.  The letter Mr Parmar’s family got back from the Cognitive Disorders Clinic at University College London stated that he was ‘too severely affected to score anything at all’. Any drug treatment would be ineffective.

What has made the difference, according to son Kal Parmar, is a teaspoon of coconut oil twice a day mixed with his food, which Mr Parmar has been taking since July.

The idea that a common vegetable oil — made from coconut meat and which you can buy in supermarkets — could make a difference seems ludicrous, yet in the U.S. there have been hundreds of similar anecdotes of dramatic improvements.

Kal Parmar first heard about coconut oil via a video on YouTube — it was about a doctor in Florida whose husband’s Alzheimer’s had improved amazingly with coconut oil.
Kal says he would probably have dismissed this as one more bit of internet hype if there hadn’t been a favourable comment about the oil from Kieran Clarke, professor of physiological biochemistry at Oxford University and head of the Cardiac Metabolism Research Group.

Switching The Brain Back On

Professor Clarke, an expert on the way the body makes and uses energy, believes coconut oil and similar compounds might help by boosting the brain’s energy supply.

Most of the time our brains rely on glucose from carbohydrates, but if that isn’t available — because we haven’t eaten anything for a while or because we’re eating almost no carbohydrates — then our brain cells can switch to using the energy from our fat stores. This energy comes in the form of small molecules called ketones.

As Professor Clarke explains:
‘Coconut oil contains a lot of a particular sort of fat that our bodies can use to make more of the ketone “brain food”. 'It’s known as MCT (medium chain triglycerides) and it’s not found in the fats most of us eat.’

'Alzheimers Is Like Diabetes Of The Brain'

But why should ketones help people with Alzheimer’s? One of the new ideas about the disease is that it is diabetes of the brain.  Just as diabetics have problems with glucose and insulin, so Alzheimer’s sufferers can’t get enough glucose into brain cells to give them the energy they need to lay down new memories and think clearly.

If you have diabetes, you are three times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s.

As the New Scientist magazine revealed last September, there is evidence that the brains of Alzheimer’s sufferers become resistant to insulin. This is disastrous because insulin regulates the brain chemicals that are crucial for memory.
When one U.S. researcher blocked insulin supplies in the brains of laboratory animals, they developed all the plaques and tangles that are a classic mark of Alzheimer’s.

Clearing The Memory Fog

The doctor in Florida in the YouTube video is Dr Mary Newport, a paediatrician who began using coconut oil to treat her husband, Harry, four years ago.  He had been suffering from early onset Alzheimer’s for eight years. She claims the results after he started taking the oil were remarkable.  ‘He began to get his short-term memory back,’ says Dr Newport.

‘His depression lifted, he became more like his old self. The problem he’d had with walking improved. An MRI scan showed his brain had stopped shrinking.’

So what prompted her to use the oil in the first place?

‘Some years ago, I came across a small study suggesting that Alzheimer’s patients had a problem using glucose in the brain and that ketones could be an alternative source of fuel. The study suggested a patented drink that boosted ketone levels improved memory and thinking skills in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s.’

A follow-up paper on this was published in the journal BMC Neuroscience in 2008. Dr Newport found out the patented drink contained MCT oil extracted from coconuts. ‘The patented product still wasn’t on the market, so I thought it would be worth trying coconut oil itself,’ she says.

Her accounts of Harry’s improvement, illustrated with videos on YouTube, prompted hundreds of people to share their positive experience of the oil.

One carer of a man with dementia reported: ‘His ability to speak and recall words is better, but not his ability to make good decisions.’
The carer of another man who’d had dementia for ten years said: ‘His reaction to the oil was very gradual, but his mood is so much better.’

Dr Newport recently added MCT oil to her husband’s regime because the combination gives a more steady supply of ketones, she says.  While MCT supplies more ketones, most are gone from the body in three hours. Coconut oil provides fewer ketones, but they last up to eight hours.

Let us be clear, coconut oil doesn’t appear to be a cure. Furthermore, none of these accounts prove anything scientifically. They are just anecdotes and until there is a proper controlled trial against a placebo, few medical professionals will feel the case for coconut oil has been made.

The Trouble With Dementia Drugs And Why Coconut Oil May Be A Solution

These stories, however, do suggest pure coconut oil - and the MCT oil that can be extracted from it,  is worth investigating.

Currently, the only type of drug available for Alzheimer’s patients, known as a cholinesterase inhibitor, works by boosting the amount of a brain chemical they are lacking.
It slows memory decline in about a third of patients for between six months and a year.

Last year, the NHS spent more than £70 million on the most widely used brand, Aricept. Its potential side-effects include nausea, diarrhoea and slow heart rhythms, which can lead to fainting.

Hundreds of millions of pounds have been spent trying to develop drugs to clear the plaques of damaged protein in the brain that are the classic sign of Alzheimer’s, but all have failed to get a licence.

So could tackling the energy supply to the brain be another option?

One expert who thinks it’s worth investigating is Professor Rudy Tanzi, director of the Genetics and Ageing Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School. In a recent article for the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, he explained why coconut oil might work.

‘Virgin coconut oil contains the fats that can be converted into ketone bodies, which can serve as an alternate energy source for the brain. 'The ketone bodies could potentially provide energy to  the glucose-deprived brains of Alzheimer’s patients.’

Are There Any Drawbacks?

‘The fats (found in coconut oil) can be potentially harmful to the heart, so it would be wise to regularly monitor cholesterol and triglyceride levels if you are taking it.’

As well as coconut oil there is MCT oil, which can be bought over the counter and has been used by some athletes for years (ketones also power muscles), and the patented food supplement drink that triggered Dr Newport’s original experiment.

The more expensive patented supplement is called Axona, and has a licence from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use as a medical food for patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s who are taking a drug such as Aricept.

‘The attraction of Axona for doctors is that it provides a well-studied, pure and concentrated dose of the ketone-producing properties found in coconut oil, while eliminating the multitude of triglyceride-elevating components it can contain,’ says Dr Richard S. Isaacson, associate professor of clinical neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

‘The ketone-boosting approach to Alzheimer’s seems to work in about half the patients. I’d recommend coconut oil as well if there was some good trial evidence for it.’

The First Approved Coconut Trial

This evidence could soon be coming from the first coconut trial now being set up by Dave Morgan, professor of molecular pharmacology and physiology and head of the USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute in Florida.

‘I was very impressed by the anecdotal evidence gathered by Dr Newport,’ he says. ‘Patients want to know if it works and who is going to benefit, but our physicians have no scientific basis to advise them.

‘It will be a placebo-controlled trial on patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s. I don’t expect it to slow the progression of the disease, but it does seem to improve some of the symptoms.’

What About The Scientific Proof?

Here in the UK most experts are, perhaps understandably, sceptical of the coconut oil claims.
‘There is a huge placebo response in Alzheimer’s,’ warns Professor Robert Howard, professor of old age psychiatry and psychopathology at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

‘It’s a remitting and relapsing disease, so there are often times when things seem to be getting better. It is important to protect patients from false hope and not expose them to quackery. I’m not sure there is a problem with glucose getting into brain cells but if I were to follow that line I think an existing diabetes drug like metformin would be a better bet than coconut oil. If people believe coconut oil improves symptoms it probably won’t do any harm.’

However, in some people large amounts can cause diarrhoea.

The Alzheimer’s Society, which has just had its research funding boosted by the Government, says while it ‘wouldn’t discourage anyone from taking it . . .  there is not enough evidence to suggest that coconut oil or ketones have benefits for people with Alzheimer’s, so we would not consider funding research into it’.

However, David Smith, professor of pharmacology at the Physiology Institute at Oxford University and director of Optima (Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Ageing), insists this  is a mistake. ‘We have no way of knowing if coconut oil is truly effective, but given the scale of the Alzheimer’s crisis facing us, and that there’s a rational mechanism for why it could work, it’s obviously crying out for a proper trial.’

When Kal Parmar talked to a local newspaper about his father’s improvement, he received more than 150 emails asking for help. So far about a dozen people in the UK have come back to him saying they had someone in their family on coconut oil, in some cases with impressive results following Dr Newport’s reports. Recently, following Dr Newport’s example, Kal has added a  teaspoon of MCT oil twice a day to his father’s regimen.
